The Gilded Age Season 2: Frill thrill and vintage fashion

American Gilded Age was an era of gigantic economic transformation, tremendous conflict between the old customs with family inheritance and nova money, and domination with evolutionary fashion. It was favourably exploited by the new rich buying European apparel and accompaniments of modern fashion creators. The power play between old fortunes and a brand new class of society continues to get raspy in season 2 of HBO’s original drama “The Gilded Age”.

The maker of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes takes the viewers back in the era with Season 2 premiering on October 29. Julian Fellowes is an excellent English thespian, novelist, film director and screenwriter, known for his period drama perfection. Season 2 of The Gilded Age ascertains the polite squabble for command of the city by using wealth to measure social success. Women of the society were more into full-time occupations of dressing up their social status and success. From frivolous fashion, they chose statement pieces of headgear, blooming with the season’s favourite florals, feathers and silk ribbons. They wore beautifully crafted European corsets with extravagant skirts speaking volumes through the richness of fabrics and daintiness of embroidery. Kasia Walicka Maimone, known for her work and nominations, portrays women’s fashion from the 1800s in New York City by making them look like they lived their lives like it was a catwalk. There was this essence of enormous excitement in the way ladies trekked the bustling, dusty streets of Manhattan. Kasia wonderfully recreates the excitement for contemporary viewers of The Gilded Age by recreating the grandeur of the Golden Era one more time.

The Vintage Fashion
The frill thrills continue in season 2 with the best-dressed ladies in the pivotal garden party that was planned to be filmed at New York’s lavish Old Westbury Gardens estate. Westbury estate was previously home to an heir of the Phipps family, real-life Gilded Age figures whose patriarch made his
fortune along side Andrew Carnegie at his steel company. The fashion testimony of the stunning colours of the sprawling grounds nearly pale in comparison to the vibrancy of the women’s period garb. Like Kasia quotes, despite the sepia-toned images in the history books, those bright tints are decidedly historically accurate. She worked and researched through more than 35,000 references to achieve the vision for the silver screen. In one of her interviews, she says “It's shocking to our modern eyes to see the explosion of colour from that period” admitting to being deeply steeped in the history of the 1800s era of fashion.

The Gilded Fiction
The Gilded Age season 2 theme proceeds with Easter morning in 1883, where fashion gets energetic with the statement elements of women’s wardrobe. Sliver screen lights up with the most adorned status emblem of gilded fashion. Marian Brooke, living under her aunt Ada’s roof, had met a tragic end with her love in the past season because she arrived with no money. Premier of the second season, she seems to gracefully accept the fact and move on to find passion in teaching watercolours to kids. The upper class of New York City brings forth the best of their wardrobes for gathering in church for Easter abundance. Bertha Russell’s bid for the box at the Academy of Music has been rejected while Goerge Russell takes on his battle with a growing Union at his steel plant in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Astor coming from the old system gets challenged by new power and money while the Brook House continues the love and conflict between young Marian and Aunt Ada who approves none of the new upgrades or changes with family members. Other Side in Brooklyn, the Scott family begins to heal from a shocking discovery of a young one passing away. Season 2 gears up with the first episode like it has never gone before. The Gilded Age fans can't stop gushing about the drama and its fashion credentials.
